Eligibility for Junior Athletes:
2008 USA JUDO Youth and Scholastic National Judo Championships
Contestants may participate if they meet the following eligibility requirements:
- A United States citizen (copy of passport or birth certificate required).
- A current member in good standing of USA JUDO (United States Judo, Inc.) A copy of membership
card is required or circle on bottom of entry form either “Will bring current membership card to event” or
“Will purchase membership at event.”
- Born between 1989 and 2002 inclusively for all non-collegiate categories.
- Holder of a recognized rank (USJI, USJF or USJA) of Shodan (1 degree black belt) or higher (copy
of rank certificate, current USJI membership card having the rank verification symbol “(V)” printed
following the rank, or rank card issued by the USJF or USJA National Offices,required),
OR
If rank is lower than Shodan, the Certificate Regarding Non-Black Belt contestants must be completed and
signed by a coach who holds a recognized black belt rank (proof of coach’s rank required.
Eligibility for Collegiate Athletes:

Student may participate if he/she meets the following eligibility requirements:
- A current member in good standing of United States Judo, Inc. (USA Judo). A copy of your
membership card is required OR you may purchase membership at the event.
- Is at least fifteen (15) years of age as of the date of the tournament and under the age of 28 as of
December 31 of the year of the tournament. Proof of age consisting of birth certificate, passport, or
current USA Judo (USJI) membership card having the age verification symbol "(V)" printed following
the date of birth. Note: A driver's license is not acceptable as evidence of proof of age.
- Is currently enrolled as a full time student in an undergraduate program as defined by their institution.
The student must carry no less than 12 semester hours or 12-quarter hours, nor have received or satisfied
the requirements for a baccalaureate degree.
- A student with eligibility in his final semester graduating at the end of the term with less than 12
units is eligible for the championship.
- A student who is enrolled in a graduate program at the institution from which he/she received an
undergraduate degree is allowed to participate in the Championship, so long as he/she has
eligibility remaining, and he/she participates within the applicable five-year or ten semester period.
Must show legitimate progression toward graduation. Each year is recognized at the beginning of that
academic year to include any summer school work completed. At the beginning of each year of collegiate
enrollment the student must have completed the units toward a designated degree program as shown in the
table below. By the beginning of the second year, student must have completed and passed 15% of the
requirements. By the beginning of the third year he/she must have completed and passed 25%. By the
beginning of the fourth year he/she must have completed and passed 60%, and by the beginning of his fifth
year he/she must have completed and passed 85%.

- Student is eligible to compete in four (4) seasons within five (5) consecutive calendar years of
participation (10 semesters or 15 quarters) at a 4-year College or University OR two (2) seasons within
three (3) consecutive calendar years (5 semesters or 8 quarters) at a junior (2-year) college. These time
limits are calculated from the student's original date of matriculation.
Transfers
After transfer from one four-year institution to another four-year institution, one full year must have elapsed
before the student is eligible to compete in the NCJA Judo Championship for the new institution.
A student shall not be subject to transfer qualifications if:
Student changed institutions in order to continue to participate in Judo because Judo was dropped as a sport
from their previous institution.
- There was no organized Judo program at the student's previous institution.
- The transfer is a result of enhanced educational opportunities. Written verification from the previous coach
that the student left the first program in good standing must accompany the application.
The student must complete the four seasons of eligibility in 10 semesters or 15 quarters at a university or 2
seasons of eligibility within 5 semesters or 8 quarters at a junior college. Students who transfer will retain their
remaining years of eligibility, including those who transfer from a 2-year institution to a 4-year institution.
The Eligibility Committee will judge all exceptions on merit with no guarantee of participation.
Ineligibility
- If the student does not meet the unit standards required, then he/she becomes ineligible for competition until
the student meets the unit standards.
- If it is determined that the student was ineligible prior to competition due to misrepresented or forged
documents, then he/she will, at a minimum, forfeit any medal and ranking achieved by this championship
and will lose one year of eligibility. The USA Judo Standards Subcommittee may pursue the matter for
additional action according to the by-laws of USA Judo.
Applications that are postmarked on or before March 3, 2006 will be reviewed by the NCJA Eligibility
Committee. If an athlete is determined to be ineligible, he or she will be so informed.
Applications postmarked after March 3, 2006 will be reviewed by the NCJA Eligibility Committee but
there is no guarantee that the athlete will be notified in time if he/she is determined to be ineligible.
Restoration of Eligibility
- Any student that has been declared ineligible due to grades or unit requirements must apply for
reinstatement to the Eligibility Committee of the NCJA.
- Military Service and/or Religious Service: Any student who returns from at least 18 months of active
service in the armed forces of the United States, or from at least 18 months of active service on an official
church mission will have the same eligibility as when they started their service.
- c. Hardship Exceptions: A student may apply for a hardship exception to the eligibility requirements in the
case of injuries, illness, family emergency, or other extraordinary circumstances.
The Eligibility Committee will judge all exceptions on merit with no guarantee of participation.
Petitions for reinstatement of eligibility for any reason must be received in writing no less than six (6) weeks
prior to the scheduled start of the Championship (for past notice of ineligibility) or immediately upon receiving
notice of ineligibility from the Eligibility Committee (for current notice of ineligibility). To apply for
restoration of eligibility, military or church service exception, hardship waiver, or any other eligibility question,
send a letter clearly stating and documenting the request to:
